How a heat pump works

A conventional electric hot water system heats water the same way a kettle does — it turns electricity straight into heat. A heat pump doesn't make heat, it moves it. A fan pulls in outside air, the unit extracts the warmth already in it, and puts that into the tank. Because it's moving heat rather than creating it, you get several units of heat out for every unit of electricity in.

  Set it to run in the middle of the day and it soaks up solar you'd otherwise export, storing it as hot water for the evening. It isn't a substitute for a home battery, but if you've got solar it's the cheapest way to start using more of it.

  The control system can be programmed to run on your solar or your cheapest tariff window while still keeping the tank hot when you need it. It also runs an automatic sanitising cycle.

  Wulfe back the product for 10 years, with 2 years on labour, for the original owner-occupier. Over the life of a hot water system that's worth more than any spec on the datasheet, and it's the main reason we stock them. Keep your original invoice — it's required as proof of purchase for a claim.

  The compressor varies its speed rather than switching hard on and off. That means faster recovery after a run of showers, and it's part of why the unit is so quiet.

• Triple anodes, less maintenance

  Every heat pump tank uses a sacrificial anode to stop the tank corroding, and it needs checking periodically. Wulfe fit three full-length anodes rather than one, which matters in areas with harder water and means less frequent attention over the life of the unit.

  We set the schedule so it heats on your solar or your cheapest tariff window, not whenever it feels like it. This is where the savings actually come from, and it's the step most often skipped.

• Old unit taken away

  Your old system is removed and recycled responsibly, and all installation rubbish leaves with us. We hand the space back clean.
