Top things to add while we're on site

Once we're already at your place, with the tools out and the power off, adding a job to the booked work costs you less than calling us back for it later. Here is what we suggest most often, and why.

Type A RCBO protection on all sub-circuits. A Type A device detects the kind of fault current produced by modern appliances, chargers and electronics, which older safety switches can miss.

Smoke alarm testing and replacement. We test what you have, and replace any alarm that fails or is past its ten-year expiry date, so you know the whole house is covered.

Interconnected smoke alarms. When alarms are linked, one detecting smoke at the back of the house sets off every alarm in the home, including the bedrooms. Wireless models can be linked without running new cable.

Current limitation and switchboard check. Every time we add a load, the total demand on your supply goes up, so we check the main switch, the supply and the board condition while we are there. It will almost certainly be fine, and we confirm it before anything is connected.

Old halogen downlights. Halogen fittings run hot, and in older homes they often sit close to ceiling insulation. Replacing them with sealed LED fittings removes the heat and lets the insulation be laid properly.

Security lights. Sensor lights live outdoors and eventually stop working, so it is worth a quick test of yours while we are on site to see if the sensor or the lamp has given up.

Security light with a camera. Replacing a dead sensor light with a camera version gives you the same lighting plus recorded footage, motion alerts to your phone and two-way audio at the front or back door.

Protection

Surge protection. A surge diverter at the switchboard takes the hit from lightning strikes and grid disturbances before they reach your appliances, solar inverter, EV charger and electronics.

Energy saving

LED lighting. Swapping old halogen or fluorescent fittings for LED cuts the lighting portion of your bill and gives better, more even light with far fewer replacements.

Draft stopping exhaust fans. A standard bathroom fan leaves an open hole to the roof space year round. A sealed backdraft model keeps heated and cooled air in the room, and keeps roof dust out.

Future proofing

Pre-wire for future loads. If an EV charger, induction cooktop or heat pump hot water system is on the horizon, the circuit can be run now while the switchboard is open and the walls and roof space are already accessible. The appliance gets connected whenever you are ready, without a second round of cable running.

Convenience

Power points with USB. Replacing a standard outlet with a USB model charges phones and tablets directly and frees up both sockets for everything else.

Extra power points. Adding outlets where you actually use them takes the extension leads and power boards out of service and gives each appliance its own socket.

Weatherproof outdoor power point. A sealed, weather-rated outlet for the barbecue area, the garden or power tools, so nothing has to run out through a window or door.

Motion sensor LED for your garage. Light comes on the moment you walk in with your hands full, and switches itself off after you leave.
